“Many of us, although alive, are not really alive, because we are not able to touch life in the present moment… When you wash your face in the morning, you might touch your eyes without being aware that you are touching them. You might be thinking about other things. But if you wash your face in mindfulness, aware that you have eyes that can see, that the water comes from distant sources to make washing your face possible, your washing will be much deeper… We do not need to die to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. In fact we have to be fully alive.” (Thich Nhat Hanh, “Touching Peace,” 1992)
The 7th element of the Buddhist Eightfold Path is “Sati,” the practice of mindfulness. To be mindful is not to be full of thought, but rather to fully present in the experience of life in every moment. The practice of mindfulness is the practice of a non-judgmental awareness of experience as it unfolds. It is a continual “remembering” of the present. It is an “appointment” with life itself. This basic practice is the ground of all Buddhist philosophy.
Come join us this Sunday. Gather as a community of awareness, as an experiment in listening and feeling, and as a practice of being fully alive.
Mud Lotus meets for 2 hours every 2nd and 4th Sunday. We have brief introductions and a Dharma talk and then sit in meditation for two 20-minute periods (divided by walking meditation). We finish with listening and sharing with one another in Dharma discussion.
Mud Lotus is anchored by Sara and Seth to promote the values of stillness, belonging, and engagement. We believe meditation practice should be accessible to everyone, all bodies, body types, and abilities. Folks can stay 5 minutes or the whole time and adjust themselves in whatever way best supports their practice. We welcome folks of all religions, races, sexualities, and gender identities. Please let us know if there is something we can do to support your practice.
Mud Lotus also meets, for about one hour, every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday at 8:00 am, at ILLIO, 13 E. Tulane, 43202.
